How One Downtown Fashion It Girl Skipped the Wedding Dress in Favor of a Men’s Look.

Sonia Stagg and Daniel Schmidt of Brooklyn had a fairy-tale wedding, but not in the typical sense. The altar, for starters, was decorated with fake fruit and woven with flowers, a touch that was inspired by Dutch paintings of yesteryear.

 The clothes were equally picturesque: Stagg, a showroom director for downtown tastemaker Maryam Nassir Zadeh, sported a fully beaded and fringed turtleneck-and-pant look, while Schmidt, a film director, wore a blue suit. Stagg describes the matrimonial moment in her hometown of cactus-dotted Tucson, Arizona, as a solidification of their “slow crush” nine-year relationship. “We were neighbors in our apartment building. His story is that we had mutual friends and that’s why I moved into the apartment building. Then he saw me at a party and we started to see each other more,” says Stagg. “It’s almost like we’ve been married for a long time.”
